Unable to stand for election himself, as he was a Roman Catholic, his candidate Henry Villiers-Stewart won the seat. Prior to the election, many speeches were made by O’Connell throughout the country, in Cappoquin and other venues through Waterford, and, including one famous speech made while standing on the scaffolding of St. Mary’s Parish Church, which was being built at that time. As O’Connell spoke and all the way through his speeches, jeering and fighting broke out leading to chaos. During the campaign Daniel O’Connell set up his headquarters in Dungarvan and it is also reported that he travelled to Waterford, stopping off at Kilmacthomas on the way. (The Pageant will re-create a synopsis of the above events.) Grant assisted by Waterford County Council’s Arts Grants Scheme 2006.
