Micheál O’Muircheartaigh - Feile Patron
Micheál O’Muircheartaigh, arguably the most recognisable voice of the Irish language on radio today, has generously consented to be the patron of Féile na nDéise over its existence. His involvement in the Féile has increased its stature immeasurably and, through his practical demonstration, has increased the usage of the language over the weekend of the festival.
There is hardly a better advertisement for our native language, than the easy and relaxed style of Micheál. Whether he is at his most fluent and vocal, or just using the simpler bilingual version for the benefit of the less experienced he is an inspiration for all who hear him. Never superior nor condescending, he has an appropriate word or sentence for everyone and every occasion he graces. Those with any reasonable vocabulary and a memory of classroom grammar, are usually moved to contribute 'as Gaeilge' when in conversation with him.
Now in his sixth decade as a broadcaster with RTE, his style is as fresh and recognisable as it was in that first commentary in THE 1940s. Since then, he has thrilled audiences with his command of two languages, his experience, of the games he covers and his encyclopaedic knowledge of the players, not only at county level, but in club games as well.
A gentleman inside and outside the studio, there could hardly be a more appropriate Patron or inspiration for those who have a love of our native language and pastimes. We are pleased and proud to have him at our helm and look forward to working with him for many years to come.
